Word of the day: "petrichor" refers to the distinctive, pleasant scent that often accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. This aroma arises from the oils secreted by plants during dry periods, which are absorbed by soil and rocks. When it rains, these oils are released into the air along with another compound called geosmin, produced by soil-dwelling bacteria. The combination of these elements produces the fresh and earthy scent we recognize as petrichor. This term was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers, Isabel Joy Bear and Richard G. Thomas, and it originates from the Greek words "petra," meaning stone, and "ichor," which refers to the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.
